About the Activity

The British Society for Strain Measurement (BSSM) held its 18th International Conference on Advances in Experimental Mechanics in the University of Liverpool, chaired by Dr Will Christian and Dr Ksenija Dvurecenska. There were over 150 delegates in attendance for this conference in the 60th anniversary year of the BSSM. There was an excellent quality of talks across a wide range of experimental materials research (nuclear materials, residual stresses, composite materials, soft matter, digital image correlation, biomedical research and more). This year's Measurements Lecture was delivered by Prof Genevieve Langdon, University of Sheffield: ‘Measuring the behaviour of a soft material: from quasi static to blast response’. Plenary Lectures from Prof Chris Waldon FREng (University of Liverpool) ‘Materials for Nuclear Fusion’ and Dr Chiara Colombo (Politecnico di Milano) ‘Insights on the use of IR-thermography in damage identification’ were also joined by a special talk on the History of the BSSM delivered by Prof. Janice Barton (University of Bristol). The Exhibition and Gala Dinner were again fantastic networking events to connect with the internationally reaching BSSM community.
